We're starting a poetry contest to showcase the diversity of modern literature, and we want to see what you have to offer. We are looking for daring poetry that is innovative, striking, and emotive in its narrative and ideas. We accept simultaneous submissions. We read all submissions and will respond by the announcement date.

Prizes:
1st place - $500
Runner ups (2 prize winners) - $50
All top 3 writers will be published on the Black Horse Review website

Dates:
Submissions accepted until September 15, 2024
Winner will be announced on or before October 15, 2024

Guidelines:
  • Submit up to 3 poems, all on the same document.
  • Your work must be unpublished and original.
  • Multiple submissions per reading period are allowed.
  • Writers of color, emerging writers, and international writers are encouraged to submit.​​​

♞ Editorial Workshop (Poetry, Fiction, & Non-fiction)​

Our Editorial Workshop offers emerging poets the opportunity to have their poetry, fiction, or nonfiction workshopped by our editors and considered for publication in Black Horse Review's future issues.

Writers will receive extensive in-line commentary on their work from our editor. This feedback will be detailed and specific, addressing various aspects of your work including structure, style, character development, and other key elements. Our goal is to support you in refining and strengthening your piece. Unpublished writers are highly encouraged to submit.

Please submit work in one of the following categories:
-Poetry: 3 poems
-Fiction: 1,000-2,500 words
-Nonfiction: 900-2,500 words

All submissions must be submitted in a word document.
Our workshop fee is $45 per submission.

♞ Literary Magazine Submissions​

Genres accepted:
We welcome poetry, short fiction, and creative non-fiction by published and unpublished writers. We accept simultaneous submissions. We read all submissions within three months and will contact you if we’re interested in publishing your work.

Accepted submissions will be published on the Dark Horse Review website

Guidelines:
  • Submit one or more of the following: a short story between 1,000-2,500 words; up to 3 poems; a non-fiction piece between 900-2,500 words.
  • Your work must be unpublished and original.
  • Writers of color, emerging poets, and international poets are encouraged to submit.
We charge a nominal submission fee. Submission fees are non-refundable.
